Basic Principles of Feng-Shui

"Feng-Shui" (風水) is an ancient Asian practice that involves arranging spaces to enhance harmony and balance. The principles usually consider furniture arrangement, layout of space, colour schemes as well as incorporating natural elements (plants & sunlight & water feature.) into the design principles.

Feng-Shui can play a critical role in real estate by optimizing the space, marketability, and overall value of a property. Its principles can appeal to both culturally specific markets and a broader audience seeking harmonious and well-designed living spaces.

How to apply Feng-Shui to your home?

1. Decluttering

  • Purpose: ensures the smooth flow of Qi (氣) - energy flow and reduces stagnant energy.

  • Practice: regularly organize and remove unnecessary items from living spaces.

2. Furniture Arrangement

  • Commanding Position: place important pieces of furniture, like beds and desks, in a commanding position where you can see the door without being directly in line with it. Avoid having the bed facing a mirror

  • Balance and Symmetry: arrange furniture to create a balanced and symmetrical look, which promotes harmony.

3. Use of Colors

  • Element Correspondence: choose colors that are soft and neutral (avoid vibrant colors)

  • Emotional Impact: select colors that evoke calm and serene emotions and match the furniture.

4. Mirrors

  • Energy Reflection: use mirrors to reflect light and energy, enhancing the flow of Qi. Best to place mirrors in a dining room.

  • Placement Caution: avoid placing mirrors directly opposite doors or beds, as this can cause restlessness or energy dissipation.

5. Plants and Natural Elements

  • Living Plants: incorporate healthy, vibrant plants to bring life energy into the space.

  • Water Features: use water elements like fountains to attract prosperity and abundance, but ensure they are clean and well-maintained. Have some live plants to improve air quality and have deep connection with nature

6. Lighting

  • Natural Light: maximize natural light to enhance positive energy.

  • Artificial Lighting: use soft, warm lighting to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Avoid bright and white light.

7. Doors and Windows

  • Smooth Flow: ensure doors and windows open smoothly without obstruction.

  • Energy Flow: keep entryways clear and inviting to allow Qi to flow into the space.

8. Entrances

  • Welcoming Entrance: keep the entrance clean and inviting to attract positive energy.

  • Door Color: choose a door color that aligns with the direction it faces and the desired element (e.g., red for a south-facing door).

9. Artwork and Decor

  • Positive Imagery: display artwork and decor that evoke positive emotions and reflect your intentions.

  • Avoid Negative Symbols: remove or avoid items that carry negative connotations or evoke unpleasant feelings.

10. Kitchen Feng Shui

  • Stove Position: Eesure the stove is not facing the sink (adjacent is fine)

  • Cleanliness: keep the kitchen clean and organized to promote health and abundance.

  • Enhanced Well-being: Promotes physical and mental well-being by creating a balanced and serene environment.
